One person was killed and three others injured in an explosion at a chemical treatment factory in Germiston on Wednesday.

ER24 spokesman Ross Campbell said a call for help was received shortly before 3 p.m.

A person who responded to a company cell phone said he could not immediately comment because the situation was still being handled.

Netcare911 spokesman Shawn Herbst said four men were understood to be at the factory at the time of the explosion and subsequent fire.

One of the men died and three were seriously injured.

Two were taken to the hospital by helicopter and a third person by road in an ambulance.

The cause of the explosion was not yet clear.

This comes after an explosion at a chemical company in Pinetown on Tuesday, where at least 13 people were injured.
