Johannesburg – The manhunt for a Free State man who had kidnapped his ex-girlfriend’s baby on Sunday came to a tragic end when they were both found dead.

Police found the bodies of Chepete Petrus Mngomezulu, 33, and Bokamoso Blessing Mpembe, 20 months, on a farm in Vrede on Thursday.

Police said Mngomezulu had hanged himself, but how Bokamoso died was not yet known.

Mngomezulu was not the boy’s father, police said.

According to Brigadier Motantsi Makhele of the Free State Police, the girl’s mother, Khorny Mpembe, had told them that Chepete, who was her ex-boyfriend, arrived at her home in Petrus Steyn shortly after midnight on August 30.

It is alleged that he demanded that he open the door.

“Khorny went out to talk to Chepete. As they spoke, Chepete allegedly began assaulting Khorny.

“When he went to seek help from the neighbors, Chepete allegedly took the baby and ran away with her,” he said.

Makhele said they had been looking for them since that night. They then received information about the discovery of two bodies on a farm in Vrede.

“Chepete was found hanging from the ceiling of one of the houses on the farm where he was employed.

“Bokamoso’s body was found among the trees not far from the house where Chepete’s body was found.

“The police are awaiting the results of the autopsy to determine the exact cause of Bokamoso’s death.

“An investigation and murder case has been registered for further investigation,” Makhele said.
