CAPE TOWN – Police have reportedly made a breakthrough in investigating the murder of a prominent Cape Town detective.

Die Burger and the Daily Maverick report that a man was brought in for questioning in Gauteng this week in connection with the murder of Charl Kinnear.

It comes less than a week after the lieutenant colonel, who was part of the Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit, was shot and killed outside his Bishop Lavis home.

A man from Springs, east of Johannesburg, was reportedly brought in for questioning by Western Cape detectives.

The man allegedly tracked down the slain officer via his cell phone prior to his murder.

But it’s unclear if he knew whose phone he was tracking.

This is expected to help detectives find suspects.

It is also not known at this time whether the man who was questioned has been formally charged.

The Hawks have yet to respond Eyewitness news‘query.

Kinnear may have been the target of a coup due to his involvement in investigations of the criminal underworld.

He had armed protection, but this was withdrawn several months ago.
