A man was arrested by police in Wolseley in the Western Cape after he was allegedly seen dragging what turned out to be the body of a 20-year-old local woman in the informal Pine Valley settlement on Saturday.
According to Western Cape Police spokesman Brigadier Novela Potelwa, community members alerted police to suspicious activity in the Pine Valley area after 11pm.
“Upon arrival, the police made the shocking discovery. The suspect, who also resides in the area, was subsequently arrested,” Potelwa said.
On Sunday, police were called back to the area after a passerby discovered a shallow grave in an open field. With the help of forensic pathology services, the body of a yet to be identified woman was unearthed from the shallow grave.
“A new search of the area by the police led to the discovery of another grave not far from the first. A second body was discovered, whose identity, age and gender have not yet been determined.”
Potelwa said police crime scene experts, including the K9 Unit, detectives and fingerprint experts were on the scene until Sunday afternoon.
“How the deceased died is part of a police investigation and autopsies will also be performed soon.”
Anyone with information about the identities of the deceased or what led to their death should contact Detective Sergeant Pieters of the Wolseley Police at 079 894 0195.
