A 65-year-old man was arrested after being found in possession of 11 unlicensed firearms, including a semi-automatic rifle and ammunition, on his plot in Lusthof, Hammanskraal, Pretoria.
Police attacked the suspect on Saturday after an operation led by Crime Intelligence.
“Upon arriving at the plot, the police searched the facility and found 11 firearms of various calibers,” police spokesman Colonel Brenda Muridili said in a statement.
“All firearms are not licensed, and therefore the police arrested the owner of the premises. He was charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.”
Firearms
Police confiscated three rifles, a shotgun, a semi-automatic rifle, two revolvers, two 9mm pistols and two .22 pistols with ammunition, Muridili said.
According to the police, the firearms were hidden in different parts of the house, and only two were safely stored in a safe.
“The two revolvers were the only firearms found to be safely stored in a small safe in one of the rooms as prescribed by the Firearms Control Act of 2000,” he added.
“The other firearms were found under a mattress and the others in the bedroom cabinets.”
Muridili said the firearms have been sent to a forensic science laboratory for ballistics tests to determine if they were used in the commission of a crime.
The suspect is expected to appear in Moretele Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
