On the fifth day of 16 days of activism for non-violence against women and children, a 27-year-old mother was reportedly killed in her Durban apartment on Saturday.

A 37-year-old man, known as Sherne Pillay, was arrested Sunday night.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Colonel Thembeka Mbele said Pillay’s body was found with injuries at almost 11 pm.

“She was certified dead by paramedics. A 37-year-old suspect was arrested. He will appear in Durban magistrates court soon, ”he said.

According to a source close to the investigation, the suspect allegedly told police that he had discovered Pillay locked in the bathroom when he returned to the Currie Road apartment at 7 p.m.

He claimed to have called his father and a locksmith, who opened the door.

Pillay was apparently taken to bed and the cable tie, which was apparently around her neck, was removed.

It is alleged that paramedics were called almost three hours later.

The father of Pillay’s young son wrote a heartfelt tribute on social media after denouncing the suspected killer for stealing a mother from his son.

“If I had known it would be the last time I would see you, I would have hugged you a little tighter. I would have shown you this photo so that you would always remember the joy in our son’s smile when we were together. I will do my best to raise our son to the best of my ability and make sure his memory lives on as long as we live. Rest well, heartbeat. I will always love you, ”he wrote on Facebook.
