A 24-year-old man was arrested after the rape of a six-year-old girl who had been sent to a supermarket in the Itsoseng section in Hebron.

Gauteng police spokesman Col Adéle Myburgh said the man was arrested over the weekend.

“According to the information available at this stage, the victim was sent by her mother to the local supermarket on May 5, 2020. When the victim arrived at the store, the suspect allegedly stripped her and raped her.

“After the terrible experience, the victim went to her home and reported the incident to her mother,” he said.

Myburgh said other investigations led police to identify and capture the suspect with the help of community members on Saturday.

The man appeared in Ga-Rankuwa magistrates court on Monday and was charged with rape. He was detained until his next court appearance on Thursday for a formal bail request.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lt. Gen Seal Kwena praised the police and community members for the arrest. He said that crimes against women and children are a national priority.
