Mamelodi Sundowns vs Baroka FC: Kick off, TV channel, live score, team news and preview

Masandawana hopes to avoid a surprise against a Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele team eager to record their first league win over Pitso Mosimane’s team

Defending champion Mamelodi Sundowns will face relegation-threatened Baroka FC in a Premier Soccer League (PSL) match on Sunday night.

The Brazilians will be looking to maintain their league title charge following their two straight wins over Lamontville Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs.

A win for Pitso Mosimane’s team against Baroka will take them to the top of the league rankings if the leaders, the Chiefs, fail to secure a win over Bidvest Wits earlier in the day.

However, Sundowns will face an injured Baroka without a win in their last three league matches, including a loss to Chippa United in their last match.

Coach Dylan Kerr is under pressure to guide his team to a victory that would push Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele out of the relegation zone with two games to play.

Squads and team news

Mamelodi Sundowns Pitso Mosimane - August 2019

Sundowns is expected to be left without Thapelo Morena, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury, while Denis Onyango has doubts as he has been suffering from a quadriceps injury.

Mosimane is expected to keep faith in Kennedy Mweene, as the Zambian goalkeeper excelled in the absence of Onyango by keeping two clean sheets in a row.

All eyes will be on Themba Zwane and Gaston Sirino, who have been in good shape for the Tshwane giants lately and will be eager to inspire their team to a victory over Baroka.

Dylan Kerr, Baroka FC manager, March 2020

Meanwhile, Baroka will be without the services of his captain and starting goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze, who will be serving a one-match penalty.

His void is most likely to be filled by Ayanda Dlamini, as the 28-year-old stopper has played two league games this season with Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele recording a win and a loss.

Kerr is more likely to hand scoring responsibility to Evidence Makgopa after the 20-year-old forward scored three goals in five league games and could be the key to a much-needed win over Sundowns.

Match preview

In head-to-head statistics since the 2016/17 season, the two teams have met in seven league games.

Sundowns has dominated this encounter, registering four victories, while three ended in draws.

However, Baroka can cheer up from their first-round meeting against Sundowns, which ended in a 0-0 draw at Polokwane in November 2019.

The last time the Brazilians hosted Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele in a league match was in December 2018 and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
