Bloemfontein has lost his refereeing protest against Mamelodi Sundowns, who had an ineligible player on his team sheet for the Nedbank Cup final at Orlando Stadium on September 12.
Sundowns pleaded guilty and faces a fine. A sentence will be handed down on the Brazilians on Monday.
Sundowns beat Celtic 1-0 to lift their third trophy of the season, after the Nedbank Cup and the Absa Premiership. However, the Brazilians were wrong to name the suspended Tebogo Langerman on his team sheet ‚on the bench.
Celtic had hoped the result would be overturned but lost on a technicality, said club chief executive Khumbulani Konco.
“Yes, that’s true,” Konco told TimesLIVE on Friday night, asking to confirm that Celtic had lost the protest.
When asked to confirm that it was the delay in Celtic’s protest that caused them to lose, Konco said: “Ha. Remember dealing with this, the referee was looking at the NSL Handbook.
“So the NSL Handbook says that [a protest] should be done 30 minutes before the start. We protested in the second half ”.
Sundowns’ victory in the biobubble final behind closed doors came through Gaston Sirino’s goal in the 80th minute.
