“Actually, that’s what the doctors said, that I am ‘a miracle’, because they expected the worst because of my age.”

After his admission, Itsweng initially received non-invasive ventilation.

“Then they put me on a ventilator on June 29 because my oxygen pressure had dropped.

“I was in the lifeguard machine until July 14. They then took me to a high level of care for two days before I was discharged on July 17.

“I want to thank my doctor, Dr. Moledi, for a job well done. He was very happy with the way I responded to his treatment because my age was against me and the cardiac comorbidities.

“When I was discharged, I couldn’t walk and all recovery was at home. I should mention that I have a very supportive family. My wife and five daughters were fantastic. They came together so that he could have a speedy recovery.

“I am still struggling with my voice, which is improving after seeing an otolaryngologist [ear‚ nose and throat] surgeon.

“Given the circumstances, I must say that I am doing very well. It was by the grace of God that I survived Covid-19.

“Thank you to the Union Hospital ICU staff for working so hard that I managed to get by. I owe my life to them and to my loving family. “

Itsweng said that now he is gradually recovering at home.

“My lungs are fine. I had a narrowing of my larynx, and I have seen the ENT surgeon for that and he did a little procedure, ”he said.

“It happens because those tubes don’t have to be there for that long, so they traumatize the system.

“I run out of energy if I try to run or something, but now I can walk just fine,” he said.

Bonny Sebotsane died in November of last year.
