Masandawana captain has shared his thoughts on the debate over who should be crowned PSL champion
Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana is against the idea of handing over the Premier Soccer League (PSL) trophy to leaders Kaizer Chiefs, saying they also believe they can secure it.
Reigning PSL champions follow Amakhosi by four points and the veteran midfielder explains that it would be unfair to give it to Amakhosi because the gap is narrower compared to the English Premier League, where Liverpool leads with 25 points.
Additionally, the Masandawana midfielder expressed that it is unusual for them not to play soccer at this time of year, saying defender Thapelo Morena is now using the break to recover from injury because they need it.
“I think it will be very unfair because each team is hopeful that they can do something,” Kekana said. Sport24.
“It will be very challenging because when you ask us like Sundowns, do we think we were going to win the league? The answer is obvious: yes, we were going to win the league.”
“You can’t prove that in the boardroom because soccer is played on the field and you can’t put mathematical equations on it because it doesn’t work that way in soccer.”
“For me, it would be very unfair if you gave the Chiefs or Sundowns the league because there were still nine games left and that’s a lot of football.”
“Not only are people fighting to win the league, but they look at the teams at the bottom; the points that separate them are very thin, so who are you going to relegate?
“If we were talking about a game or they had too big an advantage to be caught, then I would understand. For example, Liverpool, who have a 25 point advantage over the English Premier League, can give them the league but I don’t know how they will handle those teams at the end of the record. “
The current Telkom Knockout Cup winner also suggested that the forced recess due to the coronavirus pandemic is a blessing in disguise for coach Pitso Mosimane who will want to see Morena at her best.

“For us, it is unusual not to be playing at this point in the season,” he added.
“The national team also loved us at some point and we didn’t feel it because we were doing something that we really love and are passionate about.”
“But it will be good for us. This morning Thapelo jogged a bit, which is good for him and for the team. We are at a stage where we really need Thapelo the most.”
