Maluleka faces an uncertain future as Brazilians prepare to downsize

Mamelodi sundowns they are set to release more players in the coming weeks to cut the current squad, said the head coach Manqoba Mngqithi.

The Brazilians have brought in several big-name players throughout the year and ahead of the 2020/21 season.

Jody February, Grant Margeman, Lesedi Kapinga, Ricardo Goss, Haashim Domingo, Gift Motupa, Luvuyo Phewa, Peter Shalulile, Aubrey Modiba, Mothibi Mvala, Kermit Erasmus and George Maluleka are the new faces of Chloorkop this season.

Most of these players were signed when Pitso Mosimane was still Masandawana’s head coach before opting to join Al Ahly in Egypt.

Now, under a new regime with Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena as joint head coaches alongside senior manager Steve Komphela, the technical staff are looking to cut back on the current squad.

Left-back Malebogo Modise has already joined Maritzburg United on loan for one season, while right-back Nicholus Lukhubeni will be in the Premiership, new boys Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) for the rest of the campaign.

Speaking to the media after MTN8’s shocking quarter-final knockout loss to Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday, Mngqithi revealed that some players will be loaned out.

Recent rumors have suggested that Maluleka may leave earlier than expected despite signing with Masandawana in January.

“There will be players who will be released, but at this stage we have to look at them very closely because we have a very big team,” Mngqithi said.

“We are trying to make sure we have a sizeable team that we can work on without too much disruption.

“And we are hopeful that in the coming weeks we can have a team that we believe will stay with us and possibly other players will have the opportunity to go play elsewhere.”

“We are not going to have a squad like the one we have now, because there are too many players in training.”

The Brazilians kick off their Premiership title defense on Saturday against Kaizer Chiefs.

The start is at 15:00.
