CAPE TOWN – The apparent threat from the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, against police officers, could lead to violence against the women and men in blue.
This is the concern of the Popcru police union.
Addressing supporters in the Free State on Sunday, Malema made what the union viewed as an inflammatory comment about police officers.
“We will treat them the same way we treated them in the 1980s. We will not only fight them in the pickets, we will go to their homes and we will fight them in their own homes …”
There is the observation that POPCRU is concerned.
Julius Malema’s statement was reportedly directed at the police after last Friday’s chaos that erupted during an EFF protest in Cape Town.
Richard Mamabolo of the union said Malema was irresponsible and there could be dire consequences.
“We believe that he has the potential to raise the level of attacks that are currently occurring within and between police officers and worse still that he says they must go after their families. We believe this is a call for anarchy and a threat to our democracy . “
The union insists that SAPS members are impartial in the performance of their duties.
