Cape Town – South Africans are opening their hearts and wallets to Dr. Sindi van Zyl in her time of need, including retailer Woolworths, who donated R100,000 to help pay the bills in their Covid-19 battle.
She was diagnosed with Covid-19 earlier in the year and admitted to the hospital in February due to trouble breathing. Six weeks later, she is still in the hospital, the fundraising page indicated.
Known as a doctor, radio DJ and researcher who uses social media to share information related to HIV, mental health and other medical information, her husband, Marinus van Zyl, has now asked those who have been positively impacted by her to offer everything what they can. to cover their bills, which are currently around R2 million.
Because she is still unable to breathe on her own, the cost of having to use the ventilator alone is between R150,000 and R200,000 per week.
Dr. Sindi is part of our Woolies family and all we want is for her to regain her health.
We will donate R100k for #GiftSindiLife and I wish you a speedy recovery ❤️ https://t.co/Mw7pFWbAcZ

“The cost to the family … alone has already exceeded one million rand and we are running out of funds,” said Marinus van Zyl.
“He has suffered from various complications related to an extended ICU stay, and we need more funds to pay for his continued hospital stay until his lungs can cope without the ventilator. We will use the funds raised to pay the hospital bills, to allow Dr. Sindi a chance to survive. “
