M&G Media CEO Hoosain Karjieker confirmed that Mail & Guardian editor Khadija Patel and deputy editor Beauregard Tromp will leave their positions in the weekly investigative newspaper.

Karjieker said Patel and Tromp’s resignations were not due to financial difficulties, but to personal decisions.

Patel was named publication editor in October 2016, while Tromp was announced as deputy editor in September of the same year. Tromp is a veteran investigative journalist, while Patel is also the founder of the defense journalism platform The Daily Vox.

“During their time at Mail & Guardian, they have both played an important role in the stability of the newsroom and in the process put together one of the best newsrooms in South Africa,” Karjieker said in a separate statement to staff.

“We have implemented measures that will ensure that Mail & Guardian continues to produce exceptional, people-oriented journalism that sets the agenda, as it has been under their direction that resulted in the organization receiving numerous awards and recognition in a multitude of categories” .

“Although these are difficult times for all media organizations, their tenacity and agility have encouraged me to adapt to the new standard we have had to deal with. It is through their hard work and sacrifices that we have managed to weather the storm so far, and while the worst may still be on the way, I think we will now be better equipped to meet the challenges we still face, “he said.
