ANC Undersecretary General Jessie Duarte said Ace Magashule needs to clarify comments made in July that he would not step aside if accused of corruption.

ANC General Secretary Ace Magashule received a letter summoning him to appear before the party’s integrity commission, party deputy general secretary Jessie Duarte confirmed Sunday that

Appearing in eNCA’s The solutionDuarte said Magashule needed to clarify his comments during an interview in July in which he stated that he would not resign if accused of corruption. He said the general secretary cannot refuse to appear before the committee and that a meeting will be called when it is convenient for both of them.

Reports on Saturday confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa had approached the integrity committee to give an account of his CR17 campaign. Duarte said there will only be one discussion on the CR17 campaign.

Ramaphosa preemptively approached the integrity committee last week asking them for an opportunity to explain the funding for his presidential campaign from the ANC which received more than R400 million in donations.

There have been calls from ANC members like Mzwandile Masina for the president to step down until the corruption allegations against him are resolved.

Masina stated that all ANC members facing charges of fraud and corruption should step aside, according to a resolution taken at the ANC’s Nasrec conference in late 2017.

Duarte said the NEC has yet to discuss the Zandile Gumede issue and that she was placed in a leadership position despite an ongoing corruption case.

Duarte said that if an ANC member has corruption allegations against him, he should step aside and that Gumede did that.

A member cannot hold office until his or her business is concluded. However, Gumede could be a member of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislature, but cannot perform any authoritarian functions of the legislature. Duarte added that when an ANC member is convicted, they will have to leave whatever position they hold and the party will decide whether their membership will remain intact or will be eliminated.
