JOHANNESBURG – The secretary general of the African National Congress (ANC), Ace Magashule, has defended his participation in a meeting of the NEC that discussed him and other members implicated in corruption.

He told reporters at a post-NEC briefing that he was there because of his role in the party and that he had reports to hand over.

Magashule, who faces 21 charges related to corruption, money laundering and fraud charges, will appear before the integrity commission over the weekend.

He has refused to step aside, with the party obtaining a legal opinion on the matter and the NEC ruling that officials should go back to the drawing board and formulate a framework on the issue.

A cautious Magashule spoke to the media on Thursday without going into too much detail and defended his right to have been present at the three-day NEC meeting.

“It is an internal process of the ANC and I am the secretary general of the ANC and in fact there was nothing to participate in, I had to report on that.”

The general secretary also did not want to clarify a number of issues, often telling journalists that these were internal processes that should not be anticipated.

Magashule was also unable to say whether he would recuse himself when the outcome of his meeting with party leaders finally reached the top 6 officials.

When asked, he said he would depend on his teammates.

“Let the national ANC officials decide.”

His meeting with the integrity commission is scheduled for Saturday.
