Durban – A Durban man was mugged after dying in a car accident over the weekend.

Prathish Choudhree, 46, was still sitting in his overturned car when thieves, allegedly informal residents, got into the vehicle and stole items, including his cell phone.

Choudhree was driving down Higginson Highway toward the N2 in his Toyota Etios when he went off the road and landed on his roof in the median near the Link Road exit ramp at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

A Chatsworth businessman, who did not want to be named, was at the crash site shortly after the accident and claimed that about 20 people left a nearby informal settlement.

“We saw them push the car on its wheels. While we were waiting for the police to arrive, they started looting the car. The attitude of the police was ‘What can we do and who are we going to catch?’ “

The businessman said that a VW Polo rolled over last week in the same area. A tow truck driver, who did not want to be identified, said his vehicle received rocks when he went to investigate.

In July 2018, two men from Welbedacht East were mugged after their vehicle crashed in the same area.

The Havenside Community Forum reported on the Moorton Alliance WhatsApp group that motorists traveling on Link Road were allegedly stoned yesterday morning.

“This area is now considered a red zone and it would be preferable to avoid it. If someone is involved in an accident, please let us know in group chat. Medical, security and police assistance is a message away, ”stated the forum.

Shallcross Crime Forum spokesperson Mahendra Lillkan advised the public to inform the police about throwing stones or stones on the road and to obtain a reference number. She also advised people to verify messages before sharing them on social media.

“These incidents happen late at night and in the early hours of the morning. Motorists should be vigilant and drive at a reduced speed during these times. The police have been notified. The patrols are based on statistics and crime reports, ”he said.

Choudhree’s sister, Nirvana, said the family was heartbroken and had questions about the accident after hearing allegations of looting.

They hope to get the post mortem results today.

Choudhree had left a friend at Chatsworth and was returning home to Isipingo at the time of the accident. Single and living with his mother, he was a driver at a local pharmacy.

“The police called to inform my mother that the driver of the car was dead. The family rushed to the scene. We thought that maybe he had run over a pedestrian or had been kidnapped and the car crashed.

“My uncle identified himself to the police and begged them to allow us to verify who the dead man was. I still hoped it wasn’t my brother.

“Many of his belongings, including his phone, have disappeared. I only spoke to my mother and my brother from a distance outside the house. We both have medical conditions and we didn’t want to compromise anyone’s health. On Friday we shared a piece of cake at home. That was the last time I saw him “.

Police spokesman Capt. Nqobile Gwala said the incident was under investigation. Chatsworth SAPS was investigating a wrongful death case.
