Lucara Diamond recovers intact 998-carat stone from Botswana mine

JOHANNESBURG – The Lucara Diamond mining company said Wednesday that it had recovered a 998-carat tall white cleavage diamond from its Karowe mine in Botswana.

He said the stone’s recovery followed a remarkable series of diamond recoveries during a recent production run weighing 273, 105, 83, 73 and 69 carats.

In the year to date, Karowe has produced 31 diamonds over 100 carats, including 10 over 200 carats. Lucara said he was in talks with diamond maker HB Antwerp to assess next steps to maximize the value of the latest stone, the second in 10 months that weighs more than 500 carats.

“Recovering two 500+ carat diamonds in 10 months along with many other high quality diamonds in all size ranges is a testament to the unique aspect of the resource at Karowe and the mine’s ability to recover these large and rare diamonds.” said Eira Thomas, executive director of Lucara Diamond.

In third-quarter results also announced on Wednesday, the company said it had seen a stabilization of the rough diamond market and an improvement in consumer demand for polished diamonds in both Asia and the United States.

Lucara had entered into a second strategic collaboration with Louis Vuitton, the world’s leading luxury brand, and HP Antwerp for the planning and polishing of the 549-carat white gemstone diamond called ‘Sethunya’ (Flower) in Setswana, recovered from Karowe in February. Thomas said.
