Liverpool’s luck runs out despite Anfield’s win over FC Midtjylland

Liverpool now only have Joe Gomez as a senior center-back after Fabinho left the field at the start of their Champions League win.

Jurgen Klopp must have upset the football gods after finding his start in the new campaign filled with many, many setbacks. After the loss of Virgil van Dijk and with Joel Matip barely fit for more than 90 minutes of football, the Reds do not have central substitute Fabinho.

As happened previously in the season leading up to their second day of the Champions League, Liverpool’s triumph comes once again with a causality. The Reds hosted FC Midtjylland at Anfield in the second round of European football.

The home team coach decided to go with a different look, starting the clash without any of the formidable three forwards in the starting XI. The fit Diogo Jota, the underdog Divock Origi and the point to prove that Takumi Minamino were named as the top three.

Second best and pressed exceptionally well on the ball for most of the night, the Anfield team managed to clinch all the points. A score of 2-0, far from being a true reflection of the game played. With all the possession of the ball (63%) that Liverpool had in the evening, few things went according to plan in the final third.

The couple of moments they counted came in the last part of the game. Fifty-five minutes into the second half, the man who can’t stop scoring since switching from Wolverhampton to Merseyside opened his account.

For a time after Jota’s goal, Liverpool came under heavy pressure and were most of the time in danger of losing their lead. But substitute Mohamed Salah came to the rescue in the embers, winning a penalty that he later converted himself from 12 yards.

Liverpool’s true defeat

After thirty minutes of play, Liverpool saw something familiar, a defender leaving the pitch the long way and had to go to the showers early due to an injury. Fabinho pulled on what appears to be his hamstring.

The club posted a tweet stating that they are still waiting for news on CB’s understudy, who has been doing a pretty fantastic job at the rear as van Dijk’s partner and as his replacement. Young teenager Rhys Williams stepped in for his second Champions League appearance in two weeks.

Despite being only 19 years old, the defender stood his ground and helped Gomez, Alisson and company to a second clean sheet and three points. Knowing Jurgen, she’s losing sleep right now, thinking… what’s next!

Depending on how bad the damage is to his hamstring (it was a good thing to see him walk away and not limp vividly or stretch) will determine how long Joe Gomez will take the title as the only senior center back at 23.

Many things Liverpool and the German coach have to figure out before West Ham’s visit to the Premier League on Saturday night. However, first the wait for Fabinho’s result and how long he will be on the sidelines.

Apart from being on the wrong side of every decision made by the VAR, the Anfield team has lost Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Matip, VVD, Thiago Alcântara (could make his comeback against the Hammers), and now Fabinho through injury in these first days of the title defense campaign.

How do you think Klopp should line up with him this weekend against West Ham?
