Liverpool were eliminated from the Carabao Cup on Thursday’s penalties against Arsenal. Now the Reds return to Premier League action on Sunday when they face Aston Villa. This was a difficult journey last season, when Liverpool fell behind 1-0 in the first half.
They came away with a victory, when late goals from Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane sealed all three points. Liverpool will be looking for a fourth win in four attempts to start the season of the Premier League’s third consecutive campaign.
Injury News
We started with some breaking news on Friday, and that’s the Sadio Mane winger testing positive for coronavirus. He is currently in self-isolation. COVID-19 will also keep Thiago Alcantara out of this game as this will be the third game in a row that he will miss after testing positive. The midfielder progresses well while still isolating himself. Captain Jordan Henderson has returned to training and could be available on Sunday. He is unlikely to be a starter, but could provide a boost from the bank.
Liverpool also suffered a defensive injury, with Kostas Tsimikas missing the Carabao Cup clash.
The Greek defender has a thigh problem and will not be back before the international break. Joel Matip continues to recover from a muscle injury. He is on his way to be available against Everton after the international break. With that said, you can see our LFC start XI prediction at this link.
Transfers
Liverpool is not expected to make more signings in the window’s final weekend, as they have already reinforced their squad with three signings: Thiago, Tsimikas and Diogo Jota. However, it does not mean that the team will not be busy in the last days, as some players will leave.
Rhian Brewster is close to signing his move to Sheffield United. The reported deal is for 23.5 million pounds, with a buyback clause included. Xherdan Shaqiri is dating. Several teams have an interest in the veteran.
Burnley pulled out of a deal for Harry Wilson, but Liverpool would be open to selling the Welsh midfielder.
Possibilities
At Betway, Liverpool are 9/25 favorites to take away victory. The hosts are at 7/1 for a win, with 43/10 odds of a tie.
