Liverpool enter a familiar and defining period, and Jürgen Klopp should use the past as inspiration

It is often said that holiday games can make or break a team’s season. In Liverpool’s case, it has often been the defining period of the campaign.

It would be difficult for him to argue against that view this year, in a season when the league is arguably at its most competitive. The last few weeks and months have apparently resulted in a handful of teams being tagged as title contenders.

It may well turn out to be the case that three or four teams are ready with a cry to win the trophy in May, but for now Liverpool is the team to beat. This team has been there and has been there for the past few seasons, while the chasing group is relatively new to this stage, with the exception of Manchester City.

The upcoming games could give Liverpool a significant boost in the title race, should the results turn out well. The home clash against West Brom will be the start of three games over the Christmas and New Years period, before a short league break with an FA Cup draw sandwiched in between.

After hosting the Baggies, Jürgen Klopp’s men head to St James’ Park to face Newcastle, before traveling south to St Mary’s to face Southampton in their first game of 2021 just days later. These three games could well be the defining period of Liverpool’s season.

One could argue that Liverpool’s last two games have been defined a bit. Fresh from tying with Fulham, Tottenham, who at the time were at the top of the table and would be contenders for the title, followed. Then Roberto Firmino appears and scores a late winner, before Klopp’s players travel to Crystal Palace and walk away with seven goals and three points as well.

Last year, in the corresponding Christmas and New Years games, Liverpool claimed maximum points with victories over Leicester, Wolves and Sheffield United. Not only did wins against all three come, but every game was won to nil and sent a message to the rest of the league that the title was headed to Anfield.

While it wouldn’t be reasonable to expect the current team to win the next three games without conceding a single goal, winning in all of them would send another message to every other team in the league. That this team continues to be the benchmark for success in English football, and it will take a beating to dislodge them from the top of the table.

Liverpool’s December has been pretty good so far, and if that continues, then we should expect to see that four-point lead at the top of the table spread even further.

What I read on Liverpool.com

There is an excellent article on Sadio Mané written by David Lynch, which looks at the competitive side of his game.

Also, Dan has written a good article on Liverpool’s history of allowing players to leave with free transfers, and whether or not it would be a bad thing if that happened to some members of the current squad.

What i am seeing

Literally anything festive is Christmas Eve, after all. I really enjoyed watching the video the club posted of the players doing their part for the children at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. A really moving and amazing video, you really should watch it if you haven’t already.
