What comes to mind when you think of Liverpool vs Manchester United?
This is certainly the biggest rivalry in English football, if you base it on the size of the two clubs involved and the respective fans, anyway. Plus, these two superpowers have been blocking horns for decades, and they could be about to do it again this season.
For neutrals, when the two teams meet in any match, it is filled with high degrees of anticipation and the ability to enjoy the show that follows. For those associated with each club, however, it is very different.
There is always a greater amount of nerves when these two clubs meet in any capacity. Depending on the mentality of each club in each match, it is always a game of ‘not losing’ rather than winning. Avoid defeat at all costs, but at the same time have the ambition and courage to go for victory.
And there is a reason why all broadcasters want to have this event on their calendar. It attracts the largest audience figures worldwide and often serves as publicity for the Premier League as a whole.
Even though the rivalry between the two clubs is clear, we haven’t had an old-fashioned title race involving each of them for a long time. Going back to the 2008/09 season for the last time Liverpool and Man United occupied the top two positions in the top flight, but could this be the year that changes?
Liverpool this season have been far from being at their best and yet they still sit three points clear at the top of the table, albeit with a game in hand. And not far behind is Man United in second place, who could even the points if he wins his extra game.

While there may be more than 20 league games to play, it could well become the first time in a long time that these two soccer institutions have fought for the biggest prize of all in the same season. However, it should be noted that there is still a long way to go and many other factors that will undoubtedly affect future results.
The main one is the congestion of the accessories. Liverpool are not in the Carabao Cup, while Man United have yet to play their semi-final later this month, and possibly a final in April if they get there.
We will also see Premier League teams compete in the FA Cup, and it remains to be seen how much Jurgen Klopp and Ole Gunnar Solskjær take it seriously. He hasn’t been very high on Liverpool’s priority list in the past, and we hope to see if that will change.
And as we move into February and March, European football will return with Liverpool in the Champions League and Man United in the Europa League. While both teams will initially have the same number of matches, they will of course play on different days.
We have seen in the past that playing on Thursday and expecting him to play the league again the following Sunday, or even Monday, is not easy. Finally, he catches up to the teams’ fitness levels, and Liverpool’s 2015/16 campaign was a classic example.
Liverpool and Man United, who occupy the top two places in the top flight of English football, will be a welcome sight in the Premier League. Having the two biggest clubs in the country facing off will be a new sight, and Klopp hopes his team’s experience of winning the league will give them an added edge as the season progresses.
