JOHANNESBURG – Liquor dealers under the National Liquor Trade Council banner want the government to allow them to operate on weekends.
Under level one of the COVID-19 lockdown, the sale of alcohol at points of sale is only allowed Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The National Liquor Trade Council has written a formal letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa requesting that he remove regulations related to the sale of alcohol for off-site consumption, saying it was negatively impacting their business.
They have also cited the loss of jobs.
Kurt Moore of the Liquor Brand Owners Association said they supported the call.
“As an industry, we are disappointed that the government does not allow off-site consumer outlets to trade under their license terms or at least engage in some transactions on the weekends.
The National Liquor Trade Council and other partners argue that current regulations are especially harsh on taverns, bottle shops and independently owned retailers.
