JOHANNESBURG – A men’s tracking suit was mutilated to death by two young male lions who were immediately euthanized in a wildlife reserve in South Africa, police said Monday.

27-year-old animal tracking specialist Malibongwe Mfila was tracking wildlife on Saturday, including elephants and lions, to advise guides on planning game tours.

He reportedly decided to stop his vehicle and continue his search on foot.

As he walked, “he was suddenly attacked and killed by two lions,” Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said in a statement.

“Someone who was also driving inside the park noticed that these two lions were busy devouring the deceased and then alerted the park manager, who alerted the police,” he added.

Police said the lions were found to still devour the victim’s body and were immediately shot dead by rangers.

Mojapelo said that euthanizing the big cats was in line with conservation policies.

“When the lion acts like this, he will obviously repeat the same action,” he said.

In a statement, the South African National Parks authority SANParks confirmed that the two lions were immediately euthanized for autopsies.

SANParks CEO Fundisile Mketeni said the incident had left staff “distraught.”

The incident took place near the Marabata luxury cabins, located in the Marakele National Park in the mountainous northernmost province of Limpopo.
