Marvin Orie will be caught in 49 international Super Rugby matches
- Lions lockout Marvin Orie will miss a 50th Super Rugby cap this weekend.
- While SA Rugby has told the franchises that it is their prerogative as to how they want to limit players, Super Rugby Unlocked will be recorded separately from the main tournament.
- The Lions themselves have confirmed that they view the Unlocked Series as a new competition.
While you are unlikely to be overly disappointed, Lions to block Marvin orie You will not be credited with a No. 50 Super Rugby cap when you face your Sharks counterparts in Friday’s first Super Rugby Unlocked game in Durban.
SA Rugby previously sent a statement to the franchises that it will be up to them to decide how they want to recognize their players in this regard.
However, the federation added that “for Sanzaar’s record purposes, (Super Rugby) appearances and points will be kept separate.”
Orie, 27, has played 39 times for the Lions in addition to 10 games for the Bulls.
Perhaps sensibly, the Lions have officially stated that the Unlocked series will not be considered part of the Super Rugby portfolio.
“We see this as new competition. No previous limits will be added,” said a spokesman for the franchise.
After all, the Cheetahs have not been a part of the tournament since their controversial elimination in 2017, while the only tangible association of Pumas and Griquas with the 25-year product has been being regional partners.
When asked earlier this week if some kind of comparison should be made between the Unlocked Series and Super Rugby series, Elton Jantjies also suggested that SA’s next national program should be viewed in isolation.
It’s a telling sentiment from a man who has 140 Super Rugby international appearances and has pocketed 1 103 points along the way.
“No comment on that,” Jantjies said, answering a question about whether he will miss the original tournament.
“It’s different, to have a Super Rugby and a Currie Cup combined into one and we’ve had to adapt to that. But it’s also new and a great opportunity in South Africa with both cups available.
Kickoff at King’s Park on Friday is at 19:00.
