Lionel Messi from Barcelona is the highest earning footballer in the world.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner has made no shortage of headlines over the summer after submitting a transfer request to leave his childhood club after a 19-year collaboration.
But just when a shock transfer to Manchester City seemed inevitable, disagreements over Messi’s contract at Camp Nou meant the club and the player will continue to work together.
Messi earns billionaire status
The president of Barça, Josep Maria Bartomeu, held crisis talks with Messi’s father and agent, Jorge, after the player refused to participate in training, finally reaching a mutual agreement.
It remains to be seen if Messi will stay at Barcelona for just one more season or if he will extend his contract before next summer, but his wallet certainly won’t suffer in the meantime.
Messi has long been recognized as one of the highest earning footballers in the world and was excited about the healing of Cristiano Ronaldo, who became the sport’s first billionaire.
Messi and Ronaldo top earnings
And now Forbes claims Messi’s resolution of his contract dispute has elevated the Argentine to that ten-figure promised land in its latest report on soccer earnings.
Their report notes that Messi and Ronaldo are “ the only team sports athletes to earn $ 1 billion during their careers, ” and unsurprisingly, the two superstars top the 2020 top-earning list.
Forbes formulates its figures based on conversations from player agents, commercial sponsors and soccer experts on both sides of the pond, including club salaries and endorsements.

GIVEMESPORT’s Kobe Tong says
Wowwwwwww. I’m starting to wish that my mother locked me in my room with a soccer ball for three years until I came out ready to take the Premier League by storm.
It is simply amazing how much Ronaldo and Messi have become superstars in the last 15 years and Neymar is the only player who can come up with $ 50 million from his massive salary.
Mbappe, who is in fourth place with a World Cup champion medal to boot, falls $ 84 million behind Messi despite being a teammate far from the podium.
And while Ronaldo has to settle for second overall, he can at least take comfort in the fact that no one will pocket more in endorsements than the highly marketable Portuguese.
On the other hand, let’s not keep tens of millions of dollars, rather let’s accept that we are in the wrong industry. Do Chelsea still need a goalkeeper? Frank? Frank???
