A Limpopo traffic officer faces suspension after a video of him assaulting a man went viral on social media.
The video appeared on social media on Sunday. The incident occurred Saturday at Jane Furse at a local garage and shopping center.
The Mayor of Makhuduthamaga Municipality, Minah Bahula, condemned the incident and has urged the municipal manager to act “quickly and decisively”.
“We apologize to the public. The fact has a bad image and discredits our municipality, ”he said.
“It is not typical of our municipality to behave like this. In our more than 20 years of existence as a local government, this is the first incident of this nature that not only belittles us but also destroys our culture as a municipality.
“We hope that the public understands the measure we have taken and that it is consistent with this act.”
Township spokesman Lemson Moropjane said the officer was on duty when the incident occurred and was suspended pending an investigation.
He said the officer is obligated to provide the municipality with a full representation within the next 48 hours on why he should not be suspended from work.
