The floods in Limpopo have claimed the lives of 10 people and another seven are missing, according to police.
A search operation was underway for the seven missing people, who were washed away by rivers and streams that had flooded since the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Eloise that struck Mozambique in January, said provincial spokesman Col. Moatshe Ngoepe.
“The deceased were between 8 and 73 years old, and most of the victims were young children,” he said.
“This morning (Saturday), we received a report of the disappearance of two more people, bringing the number to seven. Among them is a 14-year-old boy who is believed to have drowned in Ga-Mochemi village in the Senwabarwana area “. Ngoepe said.

He called on the residents of Limpopo to stay away from flooded bridges, rivers and streams.
“The police are concerned about these incidents as there is a growing trend throughout the province. Therefore, we call on the public to avoid swimming or crossing flooded rivers, streams and dams and avoid unnecessary walks when it rains heavily. Also Parents are warned and urged to take care of their children who walk to school, most especially since schools will reopen on Monday. “
Areas of Vhembe, Waterberg, Sekhukhune and Capricorn districts were affected.
After some sunshine and relief from rain in recent days, the South African Meteorological Service said more disturbing rains were expected over the weekend in parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.
