The Hawks arrested the director of a Limpopo company for allegedly defrauding the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) of R3.2 million in Covid-19 relief funds.

The 47-year-old director of a shelter in Mtititi was arrested after a three-week investigation into complaints from the Mtititi community outside of Malamulele, said Hawks spokesman Capt.Matimba Maluleke.

It is alleged that between April and August the director claimed R3.2 million in Covid-19 social assistance funds from the FIU on behalf of 242 workers of the Expanded Public Works Program.

“During the investigation it was established that the workers’ contracts were terminated before the state president declared the country to be closed. It is further alleged that the money claimed never reached the pockets of the former workers,” Maluleke said.

The principal will appear in Malamulele Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of fraud.
