- An Eastern Cape merchant has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 5-year-old girl.

A 31-year-old Eastern Cape merchant was sentenced to life in prison for raping a 5-year-old girl who went to his shop to buy candy and cookies in Phakamisa, outside King William’s Town.
According to police spokesman Captain Khaya Tonjeni, Tashume “Happy” Bambore lured the girl into a bedroom where he raped her on March 11 last year.
“A 36-year-old customer walked into the store and saw Bambore appear from the room while pulling up his pants. The 5-year-old boy also appeared from the room with him. The customer immediately called a 29-year-old colleague. Phakamisa and they took the girl to her mother. The girl then revealed to her mother what had happened, “said the spokeswoman for the National Prosecution Authority, Anelisa Ngcakani.
Zwelitsha police arrested Bambore the same day.
State Defender Linda Jekwa asked the Eastern Cape High Court in Bhisho not to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence of life in prison for the rape.

“I request that the court send a strong message that such crimes will not be tolerated and that the accused should be sentenced to life in prison.”
The deputy director of the Public Ministry, defender Chanzelle de Kock, said: “I am pleased with the ruling, as this will confirm the strong message from the courts that violence against women, and especially against our children, will not be tolerated.”
Eastern Cape Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Liziwe Ntshinga added: “As a province, we are concerned about the periodic reports of adult men forcibly imposing themselves on young children. We are grateful for the outcome of the good working relationship. between our detectives, the courts and the prosecution. “
