2020 Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton will return for the season-ending Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi after testing negative for Covid-19, the Mercedes F1 team said.
Hamilton was forced out of last Sunday’s Sakhir GP in Bahrain after testing positive for Covid-19 on December 2. It was the first race Hamilton missed since his debut in 2007.
Hamilton completed a period of self-isolation in Bahrain before taking a test that returned a negative reading. Mercedes says the 35-year-old man traveled to Abu Dhabi on Thursday afternoon, where he tested negative again.
The seven-time world champion will participate in tomorrow’s practice sessions before the Abu Dhabi race. William’s driver George Russell, who had replaced Hamilton at the Sakhir GP, will return to William’s garage.
Russell performed well through race weekend to give Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff something to think about when a seat becomes available in 2022.
Hamilton’s contract will expire at the end of this season and he has yet to sign a new contract with the team.
