Opinion on the way forward regarding the fate of the PSL campaign is still divided and the legend of Amakhosi has influenced his views

Former South African captain Lucas Radebe called for the cancellation of the 2019/20 Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign with current registration leaders Kaizer Chiefs declared champions.

After the cancellation of the soccer leagues in France, Belgium and the Netherlands due to the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the imminent resumption of the Bundesliga and the Chinese Super League, the PSL is divided on the route to follow.

The national league body was stranded after Safa insisted that soccer can only resume when the South African government imposes the Level 1 risk-adjusted lock.

This has divided opinion among football stakeholders, with Bafana legend Bafana Radebe advocating for the season’s cancellation, citing “people’s health” as the deciding factor.

Radebe says he is aware that ending the term and declaring the Chiefs to be champions will not be a popular decision that would receive a backlash from some quarters.

“We have never had such a difficult time. It is not just South Africa but the whole world, “Radebe told Marawa Sports Worldwide in Metro FM.

“So I think the first thing [to do] is to think about people’s health and since we have stopped everything, we are locked up, I think we should wait until the time is right.

“Leaders make difficult decisions and that is why you are a leader and you are up there. We all make difficult decisions whether we are at home or at work.

“Yes, I said we have to make a decision. We make decisions every day, but let’s look and think about the players, let’s look at the fans so we can start again, again, every time this Covid-19 goes down.”

“That’s [the season should end with Chiefs being crowned champions]. As difficult as it is. I know people will criticize.

“There will be a lot of conversation, talk already. But this is what it is. Let’s look at the record and according to the record, let everyone accept that this has happened.

“Yes, they will talk about whether Kaizer Chiefs won the league by Covid-19 or someone will be relegated by Covid-19.”

“But that’s what it is. These are the tough decisions that people who are there have to make to make those decisions.”

If the season is canceled with the Chiefs four points clear at the top, there could be a protest from Mamelodi Sundowns, who has played one game less, as well as SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates, who respectively complete the top four.

The relegated teams could also have a case against PSL.
