LONDON – Leicester made a dent in Tottenham’s Premier League title challenge on Sunday, climbing to second place in the table as Manchester United prepared to resume their historic rivalry with Leeds.
Spurs topped the table before their midweek clash with Liverpool, but are now six points behind the champions after a 2-0 loss at home.
Vardy put the day’s specialists ahead of Leicester with the final shot of the first half after Brendan Rodgers’ team received a penalty.
Serge Aurier stormed Wesley Fofana and, after referee Craig Pawson saw the incident again on the courtside monitor, the Foxes forward scored the penalty.
The Spurs had a big escape early in the second half when James Maddison had a goal ruled out for the most marginal of offside.
But Leicester doubled their lead just before the hour with an own goal.
Vardy took advantage of a poor defense from Moussa Sissoko and his cross header deflected Toby Alderweireld and entered the net.
The victory, Leicester’s sixth in seven road games, puts them within four points of Jurgen Klopp’s men after 14 games and will have Foxes fans dreaming again.
Just five points separate the 2016 champions Chelsea in eighth place, but Liverpool looked sinister in the 7-0 demolition of Crystal Palace on Saturday.
On Sunday’s early start, Sheffield United was cruelly denied its first Premier League win of the season when Danny Welbeck scored a late-tying goal for Brighton in a 1-1 draw.
Chris Wilder’s last team seemed set to claim all three points at Amex Stadium despite being reduced to 10 men late in the first half.
Substitute Jayden Bogle marked his Premier League debut with Sheffield United’s first goal in the 63rd minute.
But Welbeck’s goal left United with just two points from 14 games, eight points from deep.
