PRETORIA – On Friday a sentence will be handed down on the matrix rewriting challenge.

Afriforum and other organizations want to stop the decision of the Department of Basic Education to rewrite the
leaked math and physical science articles.

Afriforum represents four students and wants the courts to allow the marking of their scripts and of those who are not involved in the alleged irregularity with respect to the leaked papers.

Sadtu’s legal representative referred to the Matric test leak that occurred in 2016 and said the leak also happened on WhatsApp, but that the students were not forced to rewrite the test.

The Department argues that the rewrite will protect the integrity of the Senior National Certificate.

Advocate Chris Erasmus, representing the state, said that without a rewrite, the academic year would be lost.

The investigation into the incident will reportedly conclude in February 2021.
