A well-known Mpumalanga attorney was shot and killed during a home invasion near White River in the early hours of Monday.

It was identified as Gerrit Stander, 38, who worked at Swanepoel & Partners in Mbombela.

The incident occurred in the presence of his wife, according to police spokesman Colonel Donald Mdhluli. He said the details of the incident remained vague as the wife was in shock and the police needed to obtain a statement that could shed light on what happened.

“Preliminary reports suggest that a man [the father-in-law] received a message via WhatsApp that there was a robbery at his daughter’s house [wife of the deceased’s] residence, where she was asked to call the police and medical staff, as her husband had been shot, ”Mdhluli said.

“Upon arriving at the scene, the man was taken to hospital to receive medical treatment for gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, it was later reported that the man passed away in hospital.

“The police opened a murder and burglary case.”

Valuable items were stolen.

Mdhluli said a manhunt had started.

“Police are calling on members of the public to assist with information on this incident by contacting Branch Commander Det Capt John Mabunda on 082 449 0334 or by calling the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111. Alternatively, you can give a notice in the MySAPS application that can be downloaded to any smartphone, ”he said.

“All information will be treated as confidential and callers can choose to remain anonymous.”
