Manchester United still hope to make deals for Jadon Sancho and Alex Telles before the transfer deadline, Forbes reports.
Doing both moves would represent a level of success in this last stage, as well as a move already completed for Donny van de Beek.
And at first glance, the Van de Beek, Telles and Sancho movements would represent a good deal, we sure would have taken it before the window was opened.
But the way Manchester United have done this leaves much to be desired.
Once again, United’s methods in the transfer window have left the club open to great criticism.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as he is, has not been adequately supported and the coach has entered the season unprepared.
Even if United got the players before the deadline, United couldn’t get them before the season started, and Solskjaer hasn’t had the time to work with them as he should.
This flawed approach has already contributed to an early loss of three points, with United’s defeat on opening day at Crystal Palace.
If United had gotten Sancho early, before the Dortmund-imposed deadline of August 10, then the next two months could have been working on Van de Beek and defensive improvements.
Instead, a new center-back will not arrive, and we will be lucky to have an additional left back.
No lessons learned from Fernandes
The positivity of Bruno Fernandes’ arrival overshadowed what was a sham of a transfer window in January.
He signed one day before the deadline. Had he signed on January 1, Fernandes would have been available to play in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.
United lost by just one goal to City on aggregate, and the chance to win silver went out the window. If United had put success over finances, Fernandes would have been early.
He would have even been at the club last summer, instead of the club wavering and waiting until the end of January.
If United had signed Fernandes last summer, he would have secured a top-four spot before July, and there would have been no need for a rotation in the FA Cup semi-final to focus on the league.
We were hoping Ed Woodward would learn from this, but it hasn’t changed in seven years, so why now?
Woodward has left Solskjaer entering the season without knowing the composition of his team, when the coach publicly asked for new players. So far it only has one.
Even if United gets the two we’re looking at, don’t get carried away with the hype and react like Ed Woodward did a good job.
All he will have done is live up to expectations and negatively impact the team by delaying it.
