The minister assured South Africans that the release of the prisoners will be in the interests of justice for society.
JOHANNESBURG – Justice Minister Ronald Lamola warned that prisoners who will be released as part of the COVID-19 parole waiver will be closely monitored and arrested again if they violate the law.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced yesterday that nearly 19,000 low-risk offenders will be released to reduce overcrowding in correctional facilities.
The government says inmates are more vulnerable to COVID-19 because the virus spreads rapidly in confined spaces and some inmates have compromised immune systems.
The minister says he knows parolees who violate his release conditions and cause pain in society by committing heinous crimes.
He says that those who will be released should know that this is a conditional probation.
“If convicts show behavior that is in conflict with the law, we will not hesitate to revoke their parole and put them in jail.”
He has explained how the parole waiver will be carried out.
“The current process involves bringing the offender’s consideration dates of parole placement and does not alter the sentence that inmates receive. All parolees are expected to meet the conditions that are given to them.”
