JOHANNESBURG – Two KwaZulu-Natal Netcare hospitals that were in the spotlight in April are expected after staff and patients tested positive for COVID-19 to reopen on Monday.
St. Augustine Hospital in Durban and Kingsway Hospital in Amanzimtoti were forced to close after an alarming number of coronavirus cases.
Private hospitals have now been licensed by the provincial health department to allow new patients to pass through their doors.
The KwaZulu-Natal health department placed the two Netcare health centers under investigation after the COVID-19 outbreaks.
At least 66 people, including 45 health workers, tested positive at the Hospital of San Agustín.
A week later, Kingsway Hospital was closed after several front-line workers and patients were known to have contracted the virus.
Netcare regional director Craig Murphy said hospitals had improved their ability to contain the virus and had improved their disinfection measures.
KZN has the third highest number of registered infections nationwide, with at least 1,300 cases so far.
