JOHANNESBURG – Kwazulu-Natal Prime Minister Sihle Zikalala said there would be an operation on the main roads to inspect the driving licenses of truck drivers.
Zikalala said this was part of an intervention with the national government to stop the violence affecting the trucking sector in some parts of the country.
Angry groups set fire to more than 30 trucks in recent weeks and attacked drivers because they were allegedly unhappy about the employment of foreign nationals.
President Cyril Ramaphosa established an inter-ministerial committee made up of the Ministers of the Interior, Labor, Transportation and Police, to find solutions.
Speaking at a briefing on Sunday, Zikalala said they wanted to get rid of the illegal drivers.
“Soon, together with the national government, we will mount an intensive operation along the N2, N3 and N11 routes in KwaZulu-Natal, targeting drivers without the proper permits.”
