Several Verulam residents north of Durban appear to have been scammed into thousands of rands while trying to buy alcohol during the shutdown.

This is according to the security company Reaction Unit SA (Russian), who say they have received multiple complaints from community members who have tried to illegally buy alcohol from a person who took their money and did not provide the alcohol.

Reaction Unit SA answered several calls this week after receiving reports of cash theft. In all cases, shoppers / motorists were approached by a man lurking in bottle shops in the [Verulam] central business district, ”Russian spokesman Prem Balram said Thursday.

“The suspect offers victims a list of liquor for sale, then takes the order and its cash. Then he walks to the back of a bottle store on the pretext of buying the liquor and then disappears. ”

Balram said that none of the plaintiffs registered a case with police because buying alcohol during the lockdown is illegal and they would face charges. Under the disaster management law, people who buy, sell, or distribute alcohol could face a fine of up to R2,000.
