A 49-year-old KwaZulu-Natal police officer appeared before the Durban Commercial Crimes Court on corruption charges.

Chief Warrant Officer Phathamanathan Moodley of Phoenix Police Station Detective Services was arrested by the Priority Crime Directorate (Hawks) after he allegedly promised to destroy a case file in exchange for a R10,000 bonus, said Hawks spokesman Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo, in a statement Sunday. .

Subsequently, Moodley made his first court appearance and was granted bail of 1,000 rand.

Mhlongo said the officer is alleged to have been investigating a malicious property damage and assault case that occurred in the Phoenix area.

He said the suspect, who is now a whistleblower in this matter, allegedly received a call from the officer to meet and discuss the case.

“The two allegedly met at Mount Edgecombe and the noncommissioned officer allegedly requested a R10,000.00 bonus to destroy the case file,” he said.

“The plaintiff allegedly paid him 5,000 rand and the balance was due the next day. The matter was then reported to members of the Hawks and a sting operation was promptly carried out.”

According to the Hawks, when the whistleblower was paying the balance at the Phoenix police station, the team swooped in and discovered the money. The case was postponed until March 16, 2021.

In a separate matter, another senior KwaZulu-Natal police officer was arrested after he allegedly accepted a “Christmas bonus” of R5,000, News24 reported.

According to the Hawks, the author approached Colonel Kemelash Dalip Singh about a robbery case that was being investigated by his section.

Mhlongo said the complainant alleged that he inquired about the progress of the investigation, but was allegedly informed that “something was wrong with the case.”

When the Hawks were informed of the matter, a sting operation was carried out on Monday, December 21.

Singh was allegedly captured after accepting cash from the author.
