KwaZulu-Natal police say they have caught a “most wanted hitman” wanted for a series of murders at the notorious Glebelands shelter in Umlazi.
Police spokesman Colonel Thembeka Mbele said Sunday that police officers “successfully arrested wanted hitman Thobani Kwazikwakhe Mahobo, 35, also known as Laqhasha.
“He was arrested while hiding in Lamontville. Mahobo appeared in the Umlazi trial court on two murder charges and was in police custody until February 22 for further investigation. “
Mbele said it was alleged that in November last year Anele Chutshane and Phumlani Ntozakhe, both 27, were shot and killed by Mahobo at the shelter.
“They were both certified dead at the scene.
“The defendant has an assault pending with the intent of causing serious bodily harm after he assaulted his ex-girlfriend while she was inside her room at the Glebelands shelter in June of last year,” Mbele said.
“Both cases were transferred to the provincial organized crime unit for further investigation. In addition, a profile of the accused will be made to determine if he is linked to other serious crimes committed in the province ”.
Violence ravaged the shelter for several years, mainly between 2014 and 2016 when a group of men, believed to be hitmen, ordered residents to pay them 50 rand, allegedly as protection money.
In 2017, former Durban Central detective BHekukwazi Mdweshu and his seven co-defendants were arrested and tried in Pietermaritzburg High Court on charges including racketeering and murder.
