Durban – A 47-year-old man who allegedly posed as a real estate agent has been charged with fraud and is expected to make his first appearance in Durban Magistrates Court later today.
KZN police said the man was arrested Monday at his rented office in Windermere Durban.
Police spokesman Capt. Nqobile Gwala said the suspect was positively linked to a fraud case in which the whistleblower saw an advertisement for a house for sale in Umlazi via social media.
“It appeared that the house the suspect was selling belonged to someone else and was put up for sale without the knowledge of the owner.
“The price of the house that was about to be sold fraudulently to different people without the knowledge of the owners was R220,000.”
Gwala said the suspect’s laptop, cell phone and fraudulent documents were confiscated by members of the eThekwini District Task Force.
She said it is further alleged that the suspect would post houses for sale in Umlazi and the Durban metropolitan area on social media.
“The investigation revealed that the suspect would cause the unsuspecting and desperate customer to sign an offer for a home purchase agreement by showing them photographs.”
In another incident, Durban’s woman Nokwanda Vukaphi, 39, was charged with eight counts of fraud at the Durban Magistrates Court in July.
Vukaphi is alleged to be falsely advertising flats for sale.
The Daily News reported that R1.2 million was allegedly pocketed through the scheme between September 2018 and October 2019.
