DURBAN – KwaZulu-Natal Prime Minister Sihle Zikalala said provincial authorities were prepared to step up a campaign to remove illegal immigrants from the province.

Zikalala addressed the media Thursday on the sidelines of her two-day provincial lekgotla that ends on Friday.

Responding to calls to action on the recent xenophobic violence in Durban, Zikalala called on locals to embrace social cohesion and for foreigners to ensure they are in the country legally.

Zikalala said that only foreigners who are legally in the country should be welcomed and allowed to operate businesses.

“We are going to intensify this campaign to separate foreigners who are here legally from those who are not. Those who are not here legally will have to be repatriated to their own countries. “

However, the Nigerian Citizens Association of South Africa has criticized Zikalala’s statement.

KZN association president Bartholomew Eziagulu said the statement may fuel already tense relations between foreigners and some locals.

“Whenever there is a crisis on the ground, politicians always turn to illegal immigrants. It is unnecessary at this very point. What is more important is to stop the illegality and crime that is taking place.

Eziagulu said he hopes the provincial authorities will respond to his calls for a meeting to reach an amicable solution.
