A 56-year-old senior police officer from the KwaZulu-Natal provincial anti-corruption unit is expected to appear in the Commercial Crimes Court for corruption on Wednesday for an alleged Christmas bribe of 5,000 rand.
KwaZulu-Natal Hawks spokesman Capt.Simphiwe Mhlongo said members of the Durban Serious Corruption Investigation unit arrested the colonel on Tuesday.
“It is alleged that the complainant approached the superior officer in a robbery case that was investigated by his section. The author allegedly requested a progress report on the case and was allegedly informed that something was wrong with the case.
“The suspect allegedly promised to help the whistleblower on the condition that he pay him a 5,000 rand Christmas bonus.”
Mhlongo said the matter was reported to the Hawks and a sting operation was carried out Tuesday.
“The members swooped into his office where they caught him red-handed after accepting cash from the plaintiff.”
The police officer must appear before the Durban Commercial Crimes Court.
