JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has denied that it was protecting former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede by not firing her and instead asking her to resign.

Gumede faces corruption charges and an integrity commission investigation.

The party was heavily criticized after appointing Gumede as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature.

The provincial ANC held a briefing on Friday afternoon.

He insisted that it wasn’t about Gumede, but said it was about them protecting his image.

Gumede is currently facing corruption charges, but the party admitted her as an MPL last week.

The party now says that the accused members must clear up and return.

There have also been questions about the ANC secretary general, Ace Magashule, and a few others.
