DURBAN – Former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede said she wanted to consult her lawyers before appearing before the KwaZulu-Natal African National Congress (ANC) provincial integrity commission.

Gumede faces fraud, corruption and extortion charges related to a 2016 waste collection tender in the municipality of eThekwini worth more than R400 million.

She is among 10 ANC members in KwaZulu-Natal who have been asked to withdraw from their official positions due to the criminal charges against her.

ANC KZN spokesman Nhlakanipho Ntombela said that Gumede refused to appear before the party’s integrity commission on the date given to him, saying he wanted his lawyers to get involved in the matter.

Eyewitness news understands that he also asked to appear together with Mondli Mthembu, who is also accused in the corruption case against him.

However, the ANC rejected this request, saying that he must appear individually.

Ntombela said they were surprised by Gumede’s intention to involve the lawyers in an internal ANC matter.

“This is not a judicial process, it is an internal process of the ANC that tries to understand what the situation is with your matter and its impact on the ANC.”

Gumede has referred all inquiries to the ANC.
