The “dire conditions” in a tuition camp in Harry Gwala district, used for exam preparation, has led KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu to close it.

On Thursday, Mshengu ordered the district to close the camp with immediate effect.

He also requested that the district find an appropriate location for students and ensure that students do not miss out on academic time.

The National Senior Certificate exams are expected to begin on Thursday, November 5.

“I have also directed the Head of Department (HOD) to give me a full report before Monday, November 2, 2020, explaining how the department found itself in such a precarious situation,” Mshengu added.

“The HOD report should include the amount spent to secure this camp.”

Mshengu also hoped that action would be taken against those responsible.

“As much as we want our students to be successful and progress, we don’t see it and we are totally against accommodating our students in such dire conditions,” Mshengu said.
