The former Kaizer Chiefs mentor will work hand in hand with the others who were appointed as coaches by the Brazilians last week.

Steve Komphela has confirmed that he will indeed be joining Golden Arrows’ Mamelodi Sundowns.

News of the 53-year-old’s shock move towards Brazilians broke out Sunday night, with local publications suggesting that he had resigned and was already in Johannesburg to connect with his new colleagues at Chloorkop.

In a statement dated October 11, Komphela described this move as an exciting opportunity while also confirming that he will fill a senior coach position alongside Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena.

Mngqithi and Mokwena were named coaches last week following Pitso Mosimane’s departure to Egyptian giant Al Ahly.

“I have been given a great opportunity to join Mamelodi Sundowns as a senior coach and work with their joint head coaches, Manqoba Mnqithi and Rhulani Mokwena,” the statement read.

“I look forward to this exciting challenge and I look forward to contributing to the growth and success of Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa and on the African continent.”

The Kroonstad-born mentor expressed his gratitude to Arrows boss Mato Madlala, who allowed him to be a part of the club for more than a year.

“I would like to express my deep gratitude to Lamontville Golden Arrows President Mato Madlala and Golden Arrows FC for their support and encouragement while I was the head coach of Golden Arrows,” the statement continued.

“Mato Madlala and Mato Madlala contributed to my development and growth in soccer and I will always be grateful to her and Golden Arrows.”

The former Bafana Bafana assistant coach is expected to be introduced by the Brazilians this week, joining the club just days before the start of the 2020-21 PSL season.

Komphela will not be joining strangers on the Sundowns technical team, as he will meet with Mokwena, whom he gave the opportunity to work in a professional setting during his days on the now-defunct Platinum Stars.

He also has a healthy relationship with one of Sundowns’ senior managers at Trott Moloto, with whom he worked at Bafana Bafana.

It is understood that Komphela has already started work on Chloorkop.
